Types of personal loans

Option A – cards

  • Secured Personal Loan

Backed by an asset such as a car or term deposit, which lowers the lender’s risk and usually the rate.

Best for: Borrowers who own a vehicle or asset outright and want the lowest possible rate.

  • Unsecured Personal Loan

Requires no collateral. The lender assesses your creditworthiness (income, credit score, employment, existing debts) and prices the loan on your risk profile.

Best for: Borrowers without an asset to secure against, or who prefer not to tie an asset to a loan.

  • Debt Consolidation Loan

Used specifically to pay off multiple existing debts, rolling them into one repayment.

Best for: Borrowers juggling multiple debts who want to simplify repayments and reduce their overall interest rate.

  • Fixed Rate vs Variable Rate

Fixed: rate and repayments stay the same for the term, good for certainty. Variable: rate can move with the market, cheaper if rates drop but riskier if they rise.

Best for: Most Australians choose fixed for certainty on a defined purpose like a renovation or a vehicle.

What you can use it for

Option A – icon cards

  • Debt Consolidation

Combine multiple high-interest debts (credit cards, store cards, BNPL) into one personal loan at a lower rate.

  • Home Renovation

A popular alternative to refinancing for smaller projects ($10,000 to $80,000). No property valuation, and approval is typically faster.

  • Vehicle Purchase

For a car that is not eligible for a car loan (older models, private sales, grey imports), or when you want to own it outright from day one.

  • Medical and Dental Expenses

Unexpected medical bills, elective procedures not covered by Medicare, IVF, or orthodontic work, spread over a known schedule.

  • Wedding and Events

Weddings in Australia average about $36,000. A fixed term means you know exactly when the debt is cleared.

  • Holiday and Travel

For planned significant trips, honeymoons and family holidays, with a fixed term so you know when the debt is cleared.
