What Is a Car Loan?
A car loan is a secured credit product. You borrow a fixed amount to purchase a vehicle and repay it, plus interest, over an agreed loan term of one to seven years. The vehicle is used as security against the loan, which means the lender can repossess and sell it if you default on repayments.
Because the lender holds security, car loan interest rates are lower than unsecured personal loans. Interest is calculated on the reducing balance. As you pay down the principal, the interest component of each repayment decreases.

New Car Loans vs. Used Car Loans in Australia
The age of the vehicle changes your finance options significantly.
New car loans in Australia carry the lowest interest rates because a brand-new vehicle is the strongest possible security. You also get access to manufacturer-backed promotional rates, sometimes 0% on specific models. The downside is depreciation.
New cars lose 15–20% of their value in the first year, which means you’ll owe more than the car is worth for the first few years of the loan.
Used car loans come with slightly higher rates, but the vehicle has already absorbed most of its depreciation. A 3–4 year old car bought at the right price, even at a higher rate, often costs less overall.
Lenders do apply restrictions on used vehicles that require the car to be no older than 12–15 years at the end of the loan term and under 150,000–200,000 km at the time of application.
